About the Pregame Showcase
Initiated
in 1989, the Pregame Showcase is a public lecture series scheduled
two hours before each home football game at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The program features 30-minute
presentations by all-star faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences
on topics related to their field of expertise, followed by a 10-
to 15-minute question-and-answer period. The carefully timed programs
allow football fans to have plenty of time to enjoy the lecture and
still get to the stadium by kickoff.
Faculty lectures are developed for a general audience and address timely and interesting topics. The presentations are free and open to the public, and light complimentary refreshments are provided. Door prizes are given away each week as well.
Guests attending the Pregame Showcase are greeted by the dean and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition, all participants have the opportunity to meet exceptional faculty from the college and socialize with other attendees.
The program each year includes faculty speakers covering topics from the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, fine arts and performing arts. These faculty presenters are both outstanding scholars and teachers who often involve their students in their presentations. Although the Pregame Showcase celebrates its 22nd anniversary this fall, the college has yet to exhaust its supply of great faculty speakers.
With nearly 9,000 majors, 21 academic departments and schools, and twelve interdisciplinary programs, the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest collegiate unit on campus with richly diverse and talented faculty; therefore, there are many faculty from which to choose from for each lecture. The faculty speakers "showcased" each fall are simply representative of the faculty excellence throughout the college. As the largest college at UT Knoxville, the College of Arts and Sciences has a major impact on the university’s reputation. Tennesseans are proud of their football team and the Pregame Showcase demonstrates they have reason to take pride in UT's academic programs, too.
Football games attract a larger and more diverse audience to campus than any other single activity, and everyone is welcome to attend the Pregame Showcase, including fans from the opposing teams. Alumni and friends of the College of Arts and Sciences and the university especially enjoy attending the lectures to take advantage of the convenient opportunity to find out more about the current academic activities and programs of the college and to meet new faculty. Alumni also enjoy learning about what is going on in the departments where they studied as students and catching up on news of their favorite professors.
Whether you are a season ticket holder who attends every game, a UT Alumni visiting for a weekend, or a Knoxville resident interested in certain lectures, you are invited to come stretch your mind at the Pregame Showcase and be part of the full game-day experience.
